Hurriyat seeks meeting with PM, Musharraf

The Hurriyat Conference on Friday formally sought a meeting with Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf to "translate" the peace process in Kashmir into a "purposeful exercise."

Hurriyat Conference Chairman Abdul Gani Bhat wrote similar letters to the two leaders. The letters said: "We will have to demonstrate a deeper sense of responsibility and a higher degree of understanding in dealing with the situation, which has unmistakably assumed alarming proportions."

This is the first time since its inception that Hurriyat has written to the prime minister.

The letter was made public after Bhat, accompanied by senior Jamaat-e-Islami leader Qazi Abdullah, met Pakistani High Commissioner Ashraf Jehangir Qazi on Friday morning.

The two leaders handed over the letter for Musharraf to Qazi, besides discussing the forthcoming summit.
