Manipur MPs and MLAs to face
social boycott

Four social organisations spearheading the agitation against extension of the Centre-National Socialist Council of Nagalim (Issac-Muivah) ceasefire to Manipur on Thursday said they would socially boycott the Members of Parliament and legislators in the state for being 'anti-people'.

Announcing this at a joint press conference in Imphal, All Manipur Students Union (AMSU) president O Shyamchan, All Manipur United Clubs Organisation (AMUCO) advisers R K Anand and L Dhanabir, United People's Front (UPF) leader L Jadumani and International Peace and Solidarity Advancement (IPSA) leader S Jadumani also demanded that the legislators immediately leave the state.

They said the MPs and MLAs had 'utterly ignored' the sentiment of the people on the ceasefire issue and had no right to stay in Manipur.

The organisations had asked the legislators to resign within 24 hours, the deadline for which expired on Wednesday evening.

Thirty six Manipuri legislators, belonging to various parties, on Wednesday decided at a meeting that they would resign en masse if the Centre did not withdraw the extension of the Naga ceasefire to the state by August one. The 24 other MLAs could not attend the meeting.

Leaders of the social organisations said they would soon launch a series of agitations, including non-cooperation movements and mass sit-in protests, throughout the state.

They also condemned the burning of the national flag by some persons during Monday's demonstrations and added the agitations were aimed only against the extension of the ceasefire to Manipur.

Representatives from various other organisations, including women's groups, were also present and spoke against the ceasefire extension to Manipur territory.
