India-Pak agree to tone down the rhetoric

Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf on Wednesday agreed to tone down the rhetoric on Kashmir on both sides.

Briefing reporters in New Delhi, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Nirupama Rao said that Vajpayee rang up General Musharraf at 1045 hrs and spoke for about six minutes and told the general that he hoped to discuss substantive issues during his forthcoming visit to India.

President Musharraf expressed the view that it would be good on both sides to tone down the rhetoric as scoring debating points through the media would serve no purpose.

On Musharraf's swearing in as President, Rao said the Indian acting high commissioner in Islamabad, Sudhir Vyas, attended the ceremony in Islamabad. "For the time being, we have no further reaction on it," Rao said.
