BSF thwarts intrusion by smugglers

A Bangladeshi was killed and two others were injured when Border Security Force personnel opened fire after a group of smugglers, supported by farmers from across the border in Malda sector of West Bengal, attacked a BSF observatory party, BSF sources said on Friday.

The sources said that the smugglers, accompanied by cattle, tried to enter Indian territory at 1210 hours on Thursday.

When they were challenged, they fled, but returned with some farmers and attacked the BSF party, forcing its personnel to open fire.

A Bangladeshi was killed, the sources said, adding that two others injured in the firing were taken away by the farmers.

Two BSF personnel also received injuries in the incident, they said, adding that the BSF had lodged a strong protest with the Bangladesh Rifles over the intrusion.

They said BSF personnel did not enter Bangladeshi territory while dealing with the intruders.

Media reports in Dhaka said three Bangladeshis were killed and another was injured, allegedly by the BSF.

While the Daily Star newspaper said that three farmers were killed and another injured in the incident, a private news agency reported that a farmer was shot dead and another was injured after BSF men walked into Bangladesh and opened fired on them.
