Uma Bharati was threatened after Phoolan's death

An unidentified caller had threatened to kill Indian Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Uma Bharati on the night of Phoolan Devi's murder, police said on Saturday.

Deputy Commissioner of Police RS Krishniya said the call was received at 1.30 am on the night of July 25, the day Phoolan Devi, a notorious bandit-turned-politician, was shot dead at her official residence in New Delhi.

Sources said the caller demanded to speak with Uma Bharati. When told she was unavailable, the caller said he was phoning from Bombay and that Phoolan Devi has been eliminated and now it was the sports minister's turn.

The minister's office refused to comment.
