Decks cleared for central rule in Manipur

The government on Friday clinched Rajya Sabha approval for President's rule in Manipur with crucial support from the Congress party.

While the Lok Sabha is likely to take up the President's proclamation under article 356 for Manipur next week, Parliamentary approval is now considered a foregone conclusion.

Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani said in his reply that the Centre did not propose to hold immediate elections in Manipur. It would rather provide clean governance through President's rule for some time before holding elections.

The National Democratic Alliance government had imposed President's rule in Manipur on June 2 this year after the adamant Bharatiya Janata Party state unit had withdrawn its support from the Samata Party in the defection-ridden northeastern state.

The Rajya Sabha approval for the central rule in Manipur comes as a morale booster for the government since the National Democratic Alliance does not enjoy a majority in the Upper House.
