Disobedience movement hits normal life in Manipur

The United Committee of Manipur-sponsored three-day civil disobedience movement against the extension of the Centre-National Socialist Council of Nagaland (I-M) truce affected functioning of offices on Friday, the last day of the movement.

Central government offices remained closed for the third day with employees responding to the call by the six-body UCM, which is spearheading the anti-truce agitation in Manipur.

The scene was also the same in the state government offices, the sources added.

The people responding to the call refused to pay taxes to the government during the renewed three-day civil disobedience movement, which began from July 25.

Some services such as medical, electricity and water supply were kept out of the purview of the movement but attendance even in these offices was very thin, the sources said.

Banks remained closed though airlines operated their services as usual, the sources said.

Meanwhile, widespread stirs were reported from across the state.

Markets, shops and business establishments downed shutters in view of the massive sit-in protest against the truce by women vendors at the Imphal market complex, which is the biggest in the state, reports said.
