Pakistan extends formal
invitation to Vajpayee

The invitation from President Pervez Musharraf was handed over by Pakistan High Commissioner Ashraf Jehangir Qazi to Foreign Secretary Chokila Iyer on Friday afternoon, official sources said.

The sources said an invitation to External Affairs Minister Jaswant Singh by his Pakistani counterpart Abdul Sattar to visit Islamabad was delivered a few days ago.

However, dates for the visits of both the leaders are yet to be finalised.

Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf, during the Agra summit, had orally invited Vajpayee to visit Islamabad, which the prime minister accepted.

In his letter to Vajpayee, Gen Musharraf said that though the Agra summit failed to result in a joint declaration, the two sides have agreed to continue the dialogue process, which would help resolve the differences on all issues, including Kashmir, state-owned PTV said quoting diplomatic sources.

Gen Musharraf said he was renewing the invitation he has already extended to Vajpayee during the Agra summit.

He expressed the hope that Vajpayee would find time to visit Pakistan at the earliest.
