Phoolan Supporters Turn Violent in Delhi

The slain Samajwadi Party Member of Parliament Phoolan Devi's supporters turned violent immediately after her body was carried in an ambulance to the Palam Airport for Mirzapur on Thursday afternoon.

Phoolan supporters smashed wind screen of two police vehicles and held demonstration in front of the residence of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Rajnath Singh.

Rajnath Singh's official residence is at a short distance from Phoolan's residence.

Phoolan supporters then pelted stones on the police and the parked public vehicles and tried to gate crash inside the Rajnath Singh's house.

They then ripped out the official nameplate of Rajnath Singh and started hitting the nameplate with their slippers and shoes.

The crowd was upset over the fact that Rajnath Singh had withdrawn the security of Phoolan Devi despite the fact that Phoolan had repeatedly stated that she was getting threatening calls.

The crowd was shouting slogans, Phoolan Devi Amar Rahen before her body left for Mirzapur.

To control the fury of mob, the Delhi police swung into action and lathicharged the 100 odd supporters of Phoolan.

Earlier on Thursday morning, Mulayam Singh Yadav, the Samajwadi party chief had requested his party members to remain calm and not to opt for violence.

There has been a bandh call given by the Samajwadi Party members in Uttar Pradesh in the wake of the killing of Phoolan Devi.

So far no violence incident has been reported, but the situation in Mirzapur where Phoolan will be cremated is tense and the police is on high alert to avoid any kind of untoward incident.

Meanwhile, the Lok Sabha Speaker G M C Balayogi on Thursday morning adjourned the house over the death of the Samajwadi MP, Phoolan Devi.

The house will meet on Friday at 1100hrs.

In his brief obituary reference, the speaker pointed out that Phoolan Devi who was a Samajwadi MP from Mirzapur had fought for the poor and the downtrodden.

He said, "No words are sufficient to condemn this heinous act which cut the life short of Phoolan Devi."
