A grateful nation on Thursday paid homage to the Kargil heroes, who made supreme sacrifices driving out Pakistani infiltrators from the heights of Kargil.
Vice-President Krishan Kant, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Defence Minister Jaswant Singh and the three service Chiefs placed wreaths at Amar Jawan Jyoti at India Gate remembering the valiant soldiers on Vijay Diwas.
A flypast by the Indian Air Force was also organised to salute the martyrs starting with four MI-17 helicopters in 'Inverted Wineglass' formation carrying the national flag and the three service ensigns.
This was followed by the 'Missing Man' formation of three Jaguars which consists of a box of three aircraft with one blank slot signifying those personnel who were killed.
The anniversary will also be marked by series of functions organised throughout the country to commemorate the Kargil Diwas.
