BDR personnel involved in
border skirmish awarded

Bangladesh's interim caretaker government on Thursday announced gallantry awards for members of the para-military Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) who were killed or injured during the border skirmishes with India over three months back.

A BDR press release issued on Thursday night said, "Indian Border Security Force (BSF) suddenly attacked the Boraibari BDR border post violating international norms. Only 11 BDR men faced them."

Three BDR personnel were killed and five were injured in that clash, the release said.

The three who died were given BDR medals, while the injured got the President's medal, the release said adding, "Bangladesh government has awarded them in recognition of their indomitable courage, deep sense of patriotism and sense of responsibility."

However, former prime minister Seikh Hasina had transferred Major Gen Fazlur Rahman, the Director General of BDR, following the incident.

The skirmishes at Boraibari in Kurigram in northern Bangladesh were the worst border skirmishes between the two countries, which share an over 4000 kms long border.
