Tension gripped the border town of Kargil and its outskirts following heavy shelling by Pakistani artillery.
Police sources told rediff.com that from early on Friday Pakistani artillery guns began targeting the border towns of Batalik, Drass and Kargil.
A report received in Srinagar late on Friday afternoon said five artillery shells hit the Kargil dak bungalow. But no one was reported hurt.
"We can only hear sounds of explosion," said a resident Sanaullah when contacted on the telephone.
Reports said the shelling continued through the day and there was very little traffic plying on the roads in and around the town.
The shelling follows close on the heels of the Agra summit between Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and President Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan.
In 1999, India and Pakistan had come close to a war on Kargil after Pakistani soldiers infiltrated into the sector.
