Vajpayee, Musharraf reached several understandings: Pak

Pakistan on Thursday night said the Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and President General Pervez Musharraf had 'reached several understandings' at the summit which should be carried forward.

The Pakistan foreign ministry statement came a day after India rejected Pakistan's view that draft Agra Declaration should be the basis for future bilateral engagement.

The statement said President Musharraf and Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had 'reached several understandings' during their summit 'signifying a substantial forward step' in bilateral relations.

The statement added that the failure to reach an agreement at Agra on the full text of a joint statement was due to differences on one of its paragraphs.

"Pakistan believes that these understandings should be preserved and expanded in the interest of peace, security and development," it said calling on India to build on the foundation of these understandings.

The statement said remarks made by the Indian external affairs ministry spokesperson on Wednesday 'appears to disavow' the understandings reached between Musharraf and Vajpayee.

It said Musharraf's visit to India was an 'important milestone' on the road to resolving the Kashmir and other outstanding issues and establishing good-neighbourly relations between the two countries.
