Armymen killed in Kashmir violence

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Five army personnel were killed and 13 others wounded when militants attacked two heavily guarded army camps in the northern Kupwara district late on Sunday night.

Police sources said that Fidayeen militants attacked a heavily-fortified camp of the 24 Rashtriya Rifles at Magam Handwara in Kupwara district around midnight.

In the fighting that ensued, five soliders were killed and eight others grievously wounded. The militants managed to escape, and there is no word of any casualties inflicted on them.

Reinforcements were rushed to the spot, and massive searches have been mounted in the area.

Lashkar-e-Taiba later phoned local newspaper offices to take responsibility for the attack.

In another incident, militants attacked another camp of the 21 Rashtriya Rifles at village Zachaldara in Kupwara district, resulting in serious injuries to five army personnel. The injured have been admitted to hospital.

A five-hour gunfight in Barramullah, meanwhile, resulted in the death of four militants and an armyman. The firefight followed an attack on an army camp in Baramullah by terrorist cadres armed with grenades and assorted small arms.
