General strike paralyses life in Jammu

Life in Jammu was disrupted on Saturday morning by a general strike called by the Jammu Joint Students Federation and Panun Kashmir to protest against the visit of President Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan.

The administration has made elaborate security arrangements in Jammu City where shops were closed and traffic on the streets was skeletal.

Police and paramilitary forces are patrolling sensitive areas in the city. Security has also been increased in the sensitive districts of Doda, Rajouri and Poonch.

Police are keeping a close watch on the situation to nip any trouble in the bud.

Security in the Kashmir valley has also been beefed up with additional paramilitary and police forces being deployed to maintain law and order in view of the threats by various militant outfits, including the Hizbul Mujahideen and the Lashkar-e-Tayiba, to intensify their activities during the summit.
