India seeks Dawood's extradition

India sought on Saturday the extradition from Pakistan of gangster Dawood Ibrahim to face trial in connection with the 1993 Bombay blasts.

The demand was made when Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani called on President Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan at the Dwarika suite in Rashtrapati Bhavan.

The issue of cross-border terrorism was also taken up at the meeting, with Advani reportedly presenting documentary evidence of Pakistani support to such activities in Jammu & Kashmir.

Dawood Ibrahim, who is living in the port city of Karachi, is also accused of being involved in several criminal and anti-national activities in India.

After the twenty-minute meeting, Advani went to the prime minister's residence at 7 Race Course Road to apprise Atal Bihari Vajpayee of his talks.

Advani, who was with the prime minister for about 45 minutes, then drove to the Taj Palace Hotel where a lunch was hosted in honour of General Musharraf.

Advani during the meeting is also understood to have suggested to Musharraf signing of an extradition treaty.

He asserted that peace should not be held hostage to the resolution of any single issue, regardless of its importance for either side.

According to sources, Advani is understood to have said that if India has such a treaty with Turkey, Germany and several other nations, then there is no reason why such a treaty should not exist with Pakistan.

The sources added that Advani said that it becomes all the more imperative to have such a treaty with Pakistan, which is being used as a safe havens by criminals.
