Submit report on destruction of Neharwali Haveli: SC

The Supreme Court Friday took serious note of the demolition of a portion of Neharwali Haveli where Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf is scheduled to visit Saturday.

The haveli was the ancestral home of the visiting Pakistan president before his family migrated after partition in 1947.

Taking suo motu notice of news reports about the demolition carried out by the authorities on Wednesday and rendering two orphans - a sister and brother - homeless, a division bench comprising Chief Justice A S Anand and Justice R C Lahoti directed National Legal Aid Services Authority Member Secretary S M Chopra to visit the spot and submit a report by 4:00 pm Friday.

According to news reports, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, accompanied by a police team, had demolished a two-room portion of the haveli in which 18-year-old Ripudaman and her 11-year-old brother Zenny were living.

The authorities had demolished the structure on a several years old complaint by a Jain family, which is occupying a major portion of the haveli, the report said.

The authorities had also stated that the built-up portion posed a threat to the visiting dignitary.

However, the brother and sister had claimed that their grandmother Gurdip Kaur was given a room in the haveli after she migrated from Lahore in 1947.

They had also stated that their parents, who died few years back, had built an additional room to the structure.

The orphans said the MCD authorities had not issued any notice to them and suddenly started demolishing the structure and threw their luggage on the street.
