Chastised Farooq back in Srinagar

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Dr Farooq Abdullah on Monday evening made a quiet entry into the state and took charge of the administration.

The ruling National Conference leader had taken off for London sometime in the first week of June for a month and half long holiday to be with his family.

In his absence, his deputy G M Shah, who is a close associate of Abdullah and is also related to his family, had looked after the state administration.

According to sources, Farooq was forced to cut short his holiday after he was chastised by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for being away from the state during a crucial stage.

"My father left because this was the best option for him. If he had stayed back, people would have said that he was trying to sabotage the talks between Prime Minister Vajpayee and Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf," Union Minister of State for Commerce and Industries Omar Abdullah had told rediff.com some time back.

Now that Farooq is back, Omar has gone to London to be with his mother and is likely to return to Delhi on the eve of the summit.

According to sources, Farooq Adbullah had returned to India day on Sunday.

"He was in Delhi for the whole of Monday and left for Srinagar only in the evening," said a state official.

Attempts to contact Dr Abdullah failed as he refused to come on the line.
