Visa for Pakistanis at Indian check posts soon

Tara Shankar Sahay in New Delhi

The Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpaye on Monday decided that Pakistani passport holders will be allowed to come by road route and obtain visa at the Attari check post, said external affairs ministry spokeswoman Nirupama Rao on Monday.

She said that an additional check post will be opened at Munabao in Rajasthan, and at designated points along the international border and the line of control in Jammu & Kashmir.

She pointed out that the administrative arrangements will be made within three months to implement the decision.

Later answering questions, senior external affairs ministry official Vivek Katju said the decision would greatly help Pakistani nationals in applying for Indian visa.

He also pointed out that India's Director General of Military Operations visit to Islamabad would be finalised soon as the Pakistan government officially agreed to the visit.

Katju said that the Indian High Commissioner in Islamabad Vijay K Nambiar had already been apprised of the Indian DGMOs visit and he had let it known to the Pakistani authorities.

"We are looking at a better climate of understanding for the Agra summit and increasing people to people relations," Rao pointed out while Katju said that the agenda for the summit is trust and confidence and mutually beneficial cooperation.

According to Rao, a communication is being sent from New Delhi to the Indian High Commissioner in Islamabad on the nuclear confidence building measures.

Answering a question, Katju said that there is a possibility of opening up a consulate in Bombay.
