Maran meets Advani on TN situation

In what is being seen as an attempt to mount pressure on the Jayalalithaa government, senior Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam leader and Union Commerce Minister Murasoli Maran on Saturday met Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee for the second time in three days.

Maran had met Vajpayee soon after his return to Delhi after he was released by Tamil Nadu government on July five and had apprised the Prime Minister about the situation in the state in the wake of arrest of former chief minister M Karunanidhi.

Maran refused to say anything about what transpired at the two meetings.

"I will react on Monday," he said when asked to comment on the Tamil Nadu government's decision to set up a judicial probe to go into alleged police excesses.

His 30-minute meeting with the Prime Minister took place shortly after he met Home Minister Lal Kishenchand Advani.

He had earlier also refused to disclose what transpired between him and Advani.

But according to official sources the senior DMK leader is understood to have discussed with the home minister the threats reportedly being faced by Madras Principal Sessions Judge Ashok Kumar, who is dealing with 'Flyover Scam' case.

Asked to comment on reports that he might even quit his Cabinet berth to initiate legal proceedings against the Tamil Nadu police, he said he was consulting lawyers.

Asked specifically what purpose would it serve when the case against him had been dropped by the state government, Maran said, "I was attacked and what about the injuries suffered by me?"

This was the first meeting Maran had with Advani after the arrest of former chief minister M Karunanidhi and two Union ministers last Saturday.
