Hurriyat denies playing spoilsport

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

Senior leader of the Hurriyat Conference Abdul Gani Lone denied that the Hurriyat Conference was deliberately trying to play spoilsport by insisting on being invited for talks during the discussions on Kashmir between India and Pakistan.

"Why should we play spoilsports when the issues which are to be resolved are directly related to us. It is we who are being killed, we are the victims and we are not being invited for talks by both India and Pakistan. This is a colonial attitude."

"We want to be kept in the picture," Lone told rediff.com on Saturday morning.

He said that the invitation by the Pakistan government to the tea party to be hosted by the Pakistani high commissioner in New Delhi on July 14 was far from adequate.

"This tea party invitation would not do anything. We need to talk to India and Pakistan both and sort out the matter for Kashmir," he said.

According to Lone, a crucial meeting of the Hurriyat Conference would be held in Srinagar on Saturday to discuss the tea party invitation.

Hurriyat Conference Chairman Abdul Gani Bhat is likely to be camping in Delhi till the end of the summit meeting, he said.

According to Lone, people in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir too want the Line of Control (LoC), which divides the state into two parts, to go immediately.

"When I went to PoK, the people there were as much worried about the future of Kashmir as we are," he claimed.

"When I said that we want unification of Kashmir, they expressed their approval by raising a slogan in favour of unification," he said.
