Karunanidhi hospitalised

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam President M Karunanidhi, who was released on Wednesday after five days in custody, was admitted to Apollo Hospital on Friday for a check-up.

He was admitted on the advice of a team of doctors who had examined him on Thursday.

According to hospital sources, Karunanidhi would be 'evaluated' and undergo several tests. He is likely to be discharged on Saturday evening. After his release from the Madras central jail, Karunanidhi had complained of severe pain in his body.

Renowned neurosurgeon Dr B Ramamurthy and cardiologist Dr K Thanikachalam had examined him at his residence and advised him to undergo a thorough check-up at a hospital.

Meanwhile, in a statement Karunanidhi asked DMK cadres not to resort to self-immolation. He said he had received information that 25 partymen had died of cardiac arrest unable to bear the 'shock' over the assault on him.

Besides, 10 persons had set themselves ablaze and three committed suicide, he added.

Stating that such things would only add to his mental agony, he asked partymen to refrain from such activities. DMK would extend a helping hand to the families of the deceased, he said.
