Centre to keep a close watch on TN: Venkaiah

The Union Rural Development Minister and senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader M Venkaiah Naidu on Thursday said that the Centre would keep a close watch on the happenings in Tamil Nadu as it was duty bound to ensure that the state government 'strictly adhered' to the Constitution.

After meeting the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam President M Karunanidhi, he told a press conference that the Centre's action, reactions from the media and the judiciary in the wake of the arrest of Karunanidhi and two union ministers had a 'salutory effect' on the state.

The Centre would not interfere if the state government strictly adhered to the Constitution, he added.

He said the Centre was of the view that the incidents on the night of June 29-30 were 'violative' of the Constitution.

On the reported remarks of state director general of police that he would protect his men, he said it was strange that officials were reacting to political matters.
