Manipuri women defy curfew to protest truce extension

The army and paramilitary forces threw security cordons and set up barricades around Raj Bhavan and important government offices and installations in Imphal, as thousands of women took out torchlight processions on Thursday evening defying curfew.

It was the biggest ever protest against extension of the Naga ceasefire to Manipur.

The processions by women, supported by six organisations including the All Manipur Students Union, All Manipur United Clubs Organisation, and several women's groups, were reported from Imphal East, Imphal West and Thoubal districts, official sources said.

In Porompat and Khurai areas of Greater Imphal, protestors shouted 'Our boundary was drawn by blood', 'Withdraw the Ceasefire,' 'Don't divide the people of Manipur', 'Kill as many as you want but we'll shed more blood to protect our territory'.

Torch bearing women also took to the streets in Bishnupur, parts of Chandel district and the border town of Moreh, the sources added.

At Imphal, army and para-military forces cordoned off and barricaded Nongmeibung, Airport road, Singjamei, Uripok and Chingmeirong, sources said.

The processions began at 6.30 pm (IST) in rural areas and an hour later in Imphal and surrounding areas.

Women also demonstrated at Chajing, Lilong, Khurai, Wangkhei, Sagolband, Uripok, Moirang, Keisampat, Heingang, Langdum, Irilbung and many other places across Manipur valley.
