Karunanidhi asks state government
to withdraw security

Former Tamil Nadu chief minister M Karunanidhi on Wednesday asked the state government to withdraw the police security provided to him, saying he was harassed despite their presence at the time of his arrest.

In a letter sent to the home secretary, Karunanidhi, who has been lodged in the Central Prison in Madras after being arrested in the 'flyover scam', said the personal security guards provided to him were 'just watching the fun when senior police officials, under instructions from higher ups, harassed me'.

On June 29, when he was sleeping in his house, senior police officials broke open the door and entered the bedroom even as the security guards on duty at his house remained mute spectators, he said.

"Enough drama had been enacted by providing security and at the same time causing danger to my life and outraging the modesty of the women members of my family," he said.

Under these circumstances, he did not need any personal security, the letter said.
