Women take to streets, shops closed
in Manipur's largest market

Over 5,000 women anti-ceasefire protestors on Wednesday converged on Khwairamband, the largest market complex in Manipur, defying prohibitory orders during the curfew relaxation period.

Shops remained closed as the women, all vendors in the market, staged sit-in protests against extension of the Naga ceasefire to Manipur shouting slogans as security forces kept a watchful eye, official sources said.

Manipur Rifles and police personnel were positioned at all strategic points in the town.

Meanwhile, the anti-ceasefire stir spread to West Imphal district with over 10,000 protesters holding a rally defying prohibitory orders.

The rallyists, including Nagas and Kukis, held a public meeting at Konthoujam and pledged to 'protect Manipur territory at all cost', official sources said.

Large-scale protests were also reported from different areas of the state during the curfew relaxation period, the sources added.

Reports from the districts said that very few people turned up for the rallies organised by the United Naga Council in some hill areas to welcome the ceasefire.
