Attorney General Soli Sorabjee to
attend Cabinet meeting on TN

Josy Joseph in New Delhi

Union Home Minister L K Advani and Attorney General Soli Sorabjee would be attending Tuesday's cabinet meeting, which will take a final decision on the action to be initiated against the Tamil Nadu government for its high-handed behaviour towards Dravida Munnetra Kazhagham (DMK) leaders.

The cabinet meeting, earlier slated for Monday evening, was postponed to Tuesday to facilitate the participation of Advani and Sorabjee.

The meeting would consider the report of the Union home ministry team led by special secretary M B Kaushal on the Tamil Nadu situation.

While Advani returned late on Monday evening from his three-nation foreign tour, Sorabjee was expected on Tuesday morning. The Prime Minister had directed Sorabjee to cut short his stint in London and return to New Delhi to attend the meeting.

Sources said the home ministry team had told the Centre that its authority should prevail in states, which face a breakdown of law and order.

The team highlighted the way in which the police forced their way into Karunanidhi's house late on Friday night and then went on to manhandle Union ministers, they said.

"The report specifically points out that the entire incident was politically motivated," a home ministry official said.

Kaushal's team has also pointed out that the governor failed to verify facts about the incident from independent sources before sending a report to the Centre.
