Jaypee Palace, Amar Vilas it will be

Sheela Bhatt in New Delhi

Jaypee Palace, the most modern hotel in Agra is likely to be the venue for the historic summit between Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf.

According to a spokesman in the Prime Minister's Office, "A government team has short-listed Jaypee Palace Hotel and Amar Vilas Hotel of the Oberoi group. An announcement will be made after talking to visiting Pakistan officials."

A two-member official Pakistani team is in New Delhi to finalise the protocol and security arrangements for Gen Musharraf's visit.

The Pakistani team comprises Gen Musharraf's security chief Col Mohammad Illyas and Chief of Protocol Brig (retd) Main Khalid Habib.

Earlier, a government team had narrowed the choice down to three hotels - Amar Vilas, Jaypee Palace and Mughal Sheraton to host the summit and the visitors.

Welcomgroup's Mughal Sheraton lost the race due to the limited space it offered to security personnel to function in, vis-a-vis Jaypee Palace, said the sources.

Amar Vilas is not yet fully operational. Out of its 104 rooms, around 30-32 rooms are ready and these would be occupied by Gen Musharraf and his entourage.

According to sources, Musharraf will be staying in the most expensive and luxurious hotel in Agra.
