Fathima Beevi's resignation accepted

The Central government has accepted the resignation of Tamil Nadu Governor Fathima Beevi and Andhra Pradesh Governor C Rangarajan would now hold additional charge of Tamil Nadu, official sources said on Monday.

Sources said Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had spoken to President K R Narayanan on Sunday night about the cabinet decision to recall Ms Fathima Beevi for failing to discharge her constitutional obligation after the arrest of former state chief minister M Karunanidhi and two Union ministers.

Following this, Beevi had tendered her resignation to the President on Sunday night, which Rashtrapati Bhavan had forwarded to the government for review.

The resignation had reached the President before the formal letter from the cabinet recommending her recall.

Meanwhile, the Union cabinet, which was scheduled to meet at 1830 hrs on Monday to decide on a further course of action, would be meeting on Tuesday now.

The cabinet will deliberate on the report of the home ministry team headed by Special Secretary M B Kaushal, which returned to Delhi late on Sunday night.

The NDA delegation, led by alliance convenor George Fernandes, will also give a detailed report about the situation in Tamil Nadu arising from the arrest of former chief minister K Karunanidhi.

Fernandes had gone on record saying that the report would recommend imposition of President's rule in the state. The cabinet meeting will take up several issues relating to the Tamil Nadu developments, which could not be resolved at Sunday's emergency meeting held at the prime minister's residence.

The Cabinet would also consider issuing directions under Article 355 of the Constitution to the state government for the release of the two Union ministers.
