Thorough medical checkup for Bharat Shah

Bollywood financier Bharat Shah, who was arrested by Crime Branch sleuths on Monday for his alleged links with underworld gangster Chhota Shakeel, would be taken to Sir JJ Hospital on Tuesday for 'a complete checkup' following complaints of chest pain, hospital sources in Bombay said.

Shah, who was first taken to GT Hospital around 2000 hours (IST), was advised by doctors to be taken to the government owned JJ hospital which has better facilities for treating heart patients, the sources said adding, "We have asked him to come on Tuesday for a detailed examination."

Shah was administered medicines for controlling blood pressure at GT Hospital and was taken to the Crime Branch lock up at 2230 hours, police said.

Special public prosecutor Rohini Salian had on Monday informed special court that the police would arrange to have Shah medically examined. Shah has been remanded to police custody till January 18.

It was necessary for the police to have the accused medically examined in view of Supreme Court guidelines, Salian said on Tuesday, adding "We volunteered to have Shah examined by doctors because generally an accused becomes nervous during interrogation."

Meanwhile, Shah's lawyers would urge the court on Tuesday to release the negatives of the film Chori Chori Chupke Chupke financed by Shah. He had claimed to have obtained world trade rights of the film in lieu of Rs 120 million he had paid to finance its production.

Prosecution had opposed Shah's petition for the release of the film's negatives on the ground that there was incriminating evidence which pointed to the Bollywood-underworld nexus, on the basis of which he had been booked under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act.

Police alleged Shah had financed the film at the behest of a Karachi-based gangster who had made inroads into Bollywood.

Shah has so far financed fifty films and pumped in more than Rs one billion in thirty films, which are under production, industry sources said.
