Bharat Shah in police custody till Jan 19

In a sudden move, the Bombay police on Monday arrested top Bollywood financier, Bharat Shah and produced him before the sessions court, where cases under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crimes Act are heard. Shah was denied bail and was remanded to police custody till January 19.

Later in the evening, Shah complained of chest pains and taken to a hospital. He is suffering from hypertension and will be kept under observation through the night.

The arrest comes after weeks of speculation about police action against top Bollywood personalities. Shah had earlier been questioned by the city crime branch, as a follow-up to the arrest of Nazeem Rizvi, producer of Chori Chori Chupke Chupke for alleged underworld links.

When rediff.com spoke to Bharat Shah earlier in the day, he said, "Su kaam che e bolo ne? Aa TV par aave che e baddhu bogus che" (Tell me what you want? Whatever is on the television channels is all bogus).

A little later, when rediff.com contacted him once again to confirm the news of his arrest, Shah said, "Chhodo yaar, abhi mein car mein baitha hoon. Poora din kya yehi chalega?" (Forget it, right now I am in my car. Will you keep asking the same thing through the day?).

Meanwhile, a special court further remanded Rizvi to judicial custody till January 19, for alleged links with underworld don Chhota Shakeel and conspiring with him to bump off a few film personalities, UNI reported.

Additional Sessions Judge A P Bangale, who presides over the court granted the judicial custody.

However, Bangale extended the police remand of Abdul Rahim Allabaksh, co-producer of the film till January 15.

Both were arrested last month by a crime branch team investigating the underworld-filmdom nexus.
