Nine cops killed in Lashkar's suicide attack

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

Nine policemen and two Lashkar-e-Tayiba militant were killed in a night-long gun-battle inside the Jammu and Kashmir Armed Police Headquarters at Batmaloo in Srinagar on Friday.

Army troops and specially trained commandos surrounded the JKAP complex soon after the attack and intermittent exchange of fire continued through the night.

A senior police officer said two militants managed to escape.

The fidayeen (suicide squad) carrying automatic weapons stormed the complex early Friday evening after lobbing hand-grenades at the main gate. A Lashkar spokesman said the attack was led by Salah-ud-Din.

PCR chief Ghulam Hassan Bhat was the only senior officer inside the complex along with other staff.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah is arriving in Srinagar on Saturday to take stock of the situation.

Last month, a suicide squad had made an attempt to storm the Srinagar airport on the city's outskirts. Six Lashkar militants and five members of the Central Reserve Police were killed in the fighting that followed.
