CAT sets aside CBI director's appointment

The Central Administrative Tribunal, Bangalore Branch, on Thursday set aside the appointment of R K Raghavan as director of the Central Bureau of Investigation.

The bench, comprising the CAT vice-chairman, Justice Neelam Sanjevee Reddy and Administrative Member S K Ghoshal, passed the above order on an application filed by Karnataka Director General of Police C Dinakar challenging Raghavan's appointment as 'illegal, arbitrary and unjust'.

Dinakar, who argued the case in person, contended that the law and criteria laid down by the Supreme Court was not followed by the Union government in Raghavan's selection and appointment.

The prime minister, Union home minister, the Karnataka government, the cabinet secretary and Raghavan were among the respondents.
