Bangladesh offers expertise in quake-proof housing

International humanitarian assistance has been continuously increasing in earthquake-ravaged Gujarat as more and more countries and organisations are sending experts with high-tech equipment and money for relief and rescue operations.

The latest is Bangladesh.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina telephoned her Indian counterpart Atal Bihari Vajpayee on Wednesday night and conveyed to him her deepest grief and sympathy over the tragedy.

She also said Bangladesh was ready to share with India the expertise that her country had in constructing earthquake-resistant houses. Hasina made it clear that Bangladesh was also ready to send a team of doctors to Gujarat.

France, Britain, Switzerland, Hungary and Russia have brought along with them, besides high-tech equipment, sniffer dogs which can detect life under the rubble.

The Indian government has considerably eased the procedures for foreign contribution, which otherwise, are cumbersome. Also, foreigners are given visas on landing in Ahmedabad.

Home Minister L K Advani expressed gratitude to all those foreign countries and organisations which have contributed to earthquake relief measures.
