Fernandes keeps away from Parliament under deal with Oppn

Defence Minister George Fernandes, target of the opposition ever since he was inducted into the Union Cabinet, kept away from Parliament for the second day on Wednesday under an informal deal reached between the government and the opposition.

Two ministers of state tabled papers listed against Fernandes's name on his behalf and he was conspicuous by his absence since Tuesday.

With the deal reached in the wake of government and opposition getting together after the terror attack on Parliament, it was decided that the opposition would put the Kargil coffins issue on the backburner to ensure smooth running of Parliament.

During the entire session, opposition members refused to put question to Fernandes protesting against his re-induction into the Cabinet on the ground he was yet to be cleared by the Venkatswami Commission going into the Tehelka tapes issue.
