Parading woman naked: All eight accused released on bail

All the eight people, allegedly involved in parading a Dalit woman naked at Onenur village in Bellary district, were released on bail by a court in Bellary on Tuesday, even as Home Minister Mallikarjun Kharge asked police officials to take stern action against the culprits.

Since the accused belonged to a Scheduled Tribe, provisions of the Prevention of Atrocities against SC and ST Act were not applicable to them and they were booked under the Protection of Civil Rights Act, police said.

Superintendent of Police Sharat Chandra said action would be initiated against a head constable of Moka police station for not taking immediate action, despite being informed about the incident.

The head constable did not rush to the village, where the incident took place, on learning of the incident, he said.

The Dalit woman was paraded naked on Sunday, allegedly by some men from the Valmiki community. The latter were enraged after a girl from their community, with whom a Harijan boy had eloped, returned to her village and blamed the woman for instigating them to do so.
