Shiv Sena activists took to the streets in Thane following the death of district unit chief Anand Dighe in a city hospital on Sunday night.
The Sena leader died of a heart attack, police sources said.
Dighe was admitted to the Singhania Hospital after he met with an accident on Saturday. The vehicle in which he was travelling collided with a state transport undertaking bus in the city.
Sena activists took to the streets and prevented long-distance state government buses from leaving the city.
Sena activists took out their anger by stoning the hospital, damaging furniture and the façade of the premises.
A photojournalist of the Times of India, covering the goings-on, was reportedly beaten up by the angry activists.
Autorickshaws were off the streets and cable operators switched off their network.
The lack of transportation took railway commuters by surprise.
The Shiv Sena has called for a 24-hour Thane bandh on Monday.
