The Maharashtra government on Sunday dismissed as "mere rumours" reports of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim's close aide Chhota Shakeel being shot at in Karachi.
Minister of State for Home Kripashankar Singh said, "There is no basis to the reports that Shakeel was injured or killed in a shootout."
Asked who was behind the rumour, Singh said, "Certain organisations which wanted to create panic and take advantage of the situation by spreading misinformation."
On Sunday morning various media houses, including rediff.com, had received a call from a person claiming to be Chhota Shakeel.
Speaking to this reporter, the caller said, "I am hale and hearty."
"If I were injured in the alleged attack that is being written about in the media, I wouldn't be talking to you."
The caller even stated that he was not in Karachi and had been residing in Singapore for sometime now.
"I don't know how these kind of stories are being spread. I am in Singapore and have been here for quite sometime now," he said.
"The question of an attack on me does not arise. I really don't know who is behind all this. I am trying to find out myself," he said.
