Phoolan Devi's husband would stage a protest fast at Mahatma Gandhi's mausoleum on Monday to demand that the Central Bureau of Investigation probe the 'deep conspiracy' behind her murder.
Umed Singh said he was convinced the key suspect in the July 25 murder, Sher Singh Rana, was a small fry and there was a 'deep conspiracy' behind the killing of his wife, who was a Samajwadi Party Member of Parliament.
"This was no ordinary murder. There is a deep conspiracy behind it. The real killers have not been exposed by the police," Singh said.
"She was my wife, but the whole world was her family. She was an MP and she was killed with such ease. It is no joke. I cannot take it lying down any more.
"I want the truth to come out. Everyone wants the truth. I cannot say now who is behind her killing. I have a hazy picture. But I am convinced there is a deep conspiracy behind the murder.
"I shall go on an indefinite fast at the Rajghat on Monday. I will be joined by friends and members of Phoolan Devi's family," said Umed Singh, who had married Phoolan Devi in July 1994 in New Delhi.
Rana is one of the 11 people arrested for gunning down Phoolan Devi outside her Ashoka Road residence.
According to Delhi Police, Rana is the prime accused and it was he who allegedly fired at the bandit-turned-politician.
Umed Singh said, before undertaking the fast, he would organise a street protest near Parliament House along with friends and members of Phoolan Devi's family to seek a CBI inquiry into the killing.
He said several people from Phoolan Devi's constituency of Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh were expected to take part in the protest as well as the hunger strike.
Phoolan Devi, who surrendered to the police in 1983 and was jailed until 1994, contested elections and was elected to the Lok Sabha the first time in 1996 and again in 1999. Phoolan and Umed Singh lived in New Delhi and had no children.
Umed Singh said, "Hang me if I am guilty. But find out who the real killers are. And if you find out the truth, hang them."
