Two apex Naga church groups call for reconciliation

In a bid to foster peace and unity among people in the Naga inhabited areas of northeast, two apex church organisations of Nagaland have called for reconciliation among the Naga underground groups.

The two apex church organisations, Nagaland Baptist Church Council and Council of Naga Baptist Churches, at a meeting on Thursday night made the appeal after discussing the present political situation in the region, particularly in Manipur.

The meeting, termed as 'peace conference', endorsed the earlier call by the two apex church organisations to hoist white flags on each Naga house on August 14 and 15 to symbolise peace and non-violence.

NBCC and CNBC had earlier appealed to all Naga underground groups not to ask people to boycott the August 15 independence day functions.

The organisations also expressed 'serious concern' over the 'plight' of Nagas, who had fled the Imphal valley in the wake of anti-ceasefire stir in the valley.

The church leaders observed, "When we are talking about Naga political talks, it makes no sense for Nagas to hurt each other."

A team of church leaders will soon visit Manipur to 'express solidarity with the Nagas there', the conference said.

The two Naga church organisations, in their joint statement, said they realised the church's commitment to people at this crucial juncture, which is a 'defining moment in the history of our people'.
