Busy schedule for ISRO in 2001-02

The Indian Space Research Organisation, which successfully launched the Geo-stationary Satellite Launch Vehicle D1 on Wednesday, has a busy schedule for 2001-2002, as it has lined up several launches in the current financial year, including INSAT-3C, INSAT-3A and a meteorological satellite METSAT.

According to ISRO sources, INSAT-3C is in an advanced stage of fabrication and testing, while INSAT-3A is in various stages of development, fabrication and testing.

While INSAT-3C will incorporate 24 normal C-band transponders, two S-band transponders and S-band mobile satellite service transponders, INSAT-3A will carry 12 C-band transponders, six extended C-band transponders, six Ku-band transponders and a data relay transponder.

INSAT-3B, the first of the INSAT-3 series, was launched on March 22 last year.

METSAT, the geosynchronous meteorological satellite, will carry a very high resolution radiometer and a data relay transponder to provide meteorological data.

Preparations are also on for the launch of next PSLV-C3, which will carry three satellites --, India's technology experiment satellite, 'PROBA' belonging to a Belgium company and 'BIRD' of the German space agency, DLR.

ISRO, which was granted five patents in 2000-2001, has initiated preliminary studies for undertaking a scientific mission to the moon, sources said.
