GSLV-D1 launched

The Geo-stationary Satellite Launch Vehicle D1, India's most prestigious satellite launch vehicle, successfully soared into the skies on its maiden developmental flight on Wednesday, three weeks after it aborted owing to motor failure.

The GSLV-D1 blasted off from the SHAR Centre at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh at 1543 IST.

As the rocket lifted majestically into the clear blue skies, the scientists, engineers and technicians, led by Indian Space Research Organisation Chairman K Kasturirangan, who had been working on the project for several months clapped for joy and shook hands with one another.
