India protests against
Bangladesh's capture of village

India Wednesday lodged a strong protest with Bangladesh over the capture of an Indian village by the Bangladesh Rifles along the Meghalaya border, terming it as an ''unwarranted'' and ''unprovoked'' action.

Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Mostafa Farooque Mohammad was summoned to the External Affairs Ministry, which conveyed India's serious concern at the unwarranted action of the BDR.

On reports of 16 Border Security Force personnel being killed in an exchange of fire with the BDR in the border district of Kurigram, a ministry spokesman said the facts were being ascertained.

Dhaka has been asked to direct the local border authorities to avoid the use of force in the interest of the close and friendly relations between the two countries.

The need for restoration of status quo ante immediately and the exercise of utmost restraint to defuse tension was emphasised during the Bangladeshi envoy's meeting with Meera Shankar, joint secretary in the ministry.

"The situation on the ground is that the particular village is with Bangladesh security forces," the spokesman said. Pyrduwah is one of the territories in "adverse possession" in India's jurisdiction.

India has a 4000-km border with Bangladesh and barring 6.5 km, most of it has been demarcated. There are some territories on the Indian side in possession of Bangladesh and vice versa.
