Another Opposition strike
in Bangladesh, two dead

The Opposition in Bangladesh on Monday launched a campaign to oust the Hasina government amid reports of violence ahead of the three-day hartal.

Two ruling Awami League activists were killed at Chittagong, while opposition cadres torched vehicles in the capital on Sunday. More than 100 people were detained on charges of rioting.

The strike has been enforced by an alliance of four opposition parties led by former prime minister and Bangladesh National Party chief Khaleda Zia.

Riot police and para-military forces were put on alert as the strike paralysed life in major cities and towns across the country.

At least six persons were killed and hundreds injured during last week's 60-hour strike called by the opposition.

Zia on Sunday said the 72-hour strike would be followed by more stoppages if Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina did not step down.

"If she doesn't (step down) we will go for further actions including hartals to force her out and pave the way for early elections," she said.
