Chhota Rajan alias Rajendra Nikhalje was shot dead in Bangkok on Friday evening, reliable sources said.

According to an associate of the gangster in Bombay, 'Sir' was attacked in Bangkok and was rushed to hospital in critical condition. He died at 2015 IST.

Two of his associates, Rohit Verma and Raju Nepali, died on the spot.

According to the sources, who are in touch with Rajan's hideout in Bangkok, the attack was carried out by Chhota Shakeel's men.

The Dubai-based Shakeel is an associate of Dawood Ibrahim, the Karachi-based mafia don and prime accused in the March 1993 Bombay bomb blasts case.

Dawood Ibrahim confirmed the attack on telephone from Karachi to rediff.com, saying Rajan tried to escape by jumping out of the window of the first-floor room where he was attacked. He, however, broke his back in the fall and was taken to hospital, the don said.
