Rajakumar's release suffers further setback before SCMatinee icon Rajakumar and three of his relatives' chances of an early release from captivity receded further when the Supreme Court on Monday directed the parties to complete pleadings in the case within ten days and then file an application for fixing an early date of hearing in the case. The direction was given by a three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice A S Anand, and Justices N Santosh Hegde and K G Balakrishnan when solicitor general Harish Salve, appearing for the state of Karnataka, urged the court to fix an early date for hearing hearing the case in view of the urgency involved in it. Earlier, another bench of the court, headed by Justice S P Bhuracha had admitted a special leave petition by Abdul Kareem whose son Shakeel Ahmed was among 28 police officers killed by the brigand and his men in 1992. The petition challenges the decision of the Karnataka government to release 30 TADA detenus and withdraw cases against 115 of Veerappan's men charged with grave criminal offences. The court had also asked the solicitor general to approach the chief justice of India for fixing an early date for hearing the appeal. The court had also issued notices on two similar petitions to the state of Karnataka and the Centre challenging the interim decision of the state.
