Nagappa fails to appear in court

Nagappa, who claims to have 'escaped' from the clutches of forest brigand Veerappan, failed to appear before the division bench of the Karnataka high court on Monday, despite the court notice being pasted on the doors of his house.

Acting Chief Justice Ashok Bhan and Justice R Gururajan had instructed the Director and Inspector General of Police C Dinakar to produce Nagappa before the court on Monday if he was in custody.

This followed a petition filed by one Hottepaksha Rangaswamy who contended that Nagappa was kept in custody and prevented from speaking the truth.

Dinakar, in an affidavit, stated that Nagappa was not in police custody, but had been provided security and was free to go anywhere.

The court directed that a fresh notice to be served on Nagappa in the ordinary course through the court, besides permitting the petitioner to serve the notice himself.
