BJP plays down Uma Bharati controversy

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday sought to play down the controversy over an interview purported to have been given by its Member of Parliament Uma Bharati to news magazine The Week saying it accepts her version that she had not given any such interview.

Party vice president Jana Krishnamurthy told reporters, "The most affected and concerned person has denied and said she never gave the interview. The party accepts her version."

He was replying to questions on the interview in which Bharati had purportedly said she was once in 'love' with party colleague K N Govindacharya.

Asked whether the controversy had harmed the party, he said, "I will say this has harmed the party as such but certainly Uma has a right to say that she has been harmed the most."

He declined to answer any questions regarding the interview saying, "I will not answer any question on the basis of the interview which has been denied."
