Scientists keeping tabs on INSAT 2B

BANGALORE (AFP) - Indian space scientists were on Monday keeping a wary eye on one of the country's main telecommunications and broadcast satellites, INSAT 2B, after it lost earth lock for the second time in two days.

"We will be watching the satellite carefully for the next 24 hours following a second technical hitch on Sunday evening," said S Rangarajan, director of satellite communications at the Indian Space Research Organisation in Bangalore.

"The satellite lost earth lock again, but the problem has been rectified and we are hopeful of restoring all functions," Rangarajan told AFP.

Most of the INSAT 2B's services had been temporarily switched to other satellites.

The seven-year-old satellite first lost earth lock on Friday, forcing scientists to work through the night and much of Saturday to restore contact and services.

The INSAT 2B is one of seven in the INSAT series that are the mainstay of India's telecommunications, broadcasting and meteorological functions.
