Chattisgarh statehood bill introduced in Lower House

E-Mail this report to a friend

A bill seeking to grant statehood to Chattisgarh was introduced in the Lok Sabha (Lower House of Indian Parliament) on Tuesday by Home Minister L K Advani amidst protests by members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and Rashtriya Janata Dal who staged a walk-out.

The Home Minister rejected the objections against the creation of Chattisgarh and said the demand of the CPI-M for setting up a States' Reorganisation Commission would open a Pandora's box. The states were reorganised in the 1950s on linguistic basis.

Advani said economic and administrative viability of the proposed (three) states, including Chattisgarh, were examined before the bills were prepared and introduced.
